Forming A New Home Away From Home
When I first started as a Mercy Volunteer, I was nervous about moving somewhere I had never lived before. I wouldn’t know many people, and I wasn’t sure I would get the opportunity to meet many others. I would be leaving the city where all my friends and family were, and luckily my fears were completely unfounded.
We quickly got to know the other volunteers in the area and grew pretty close pretty fast. We bonded over our shared experiences volunteering and started throwing little parties and get-togethers. We see each other so often, they feel like a second family.
But I don’t wanna forget about the MVC alumni. We frequently meet up with alumni who are so supportive of us, always offering to take us out for drinks, karaoke, or even a musical. I’d like to give a special thanks to Hannah who frequently helps us with food if we need it and is overall such a sweet and supportive person.
Last but not least, our support team has been, well, very supportive. Any problem we have, they help us however they can. They’re also so generous, taking me and Kelly out for dinner on our birthdays, and they’re always so fun to just talk with.
Everyone I’ve met so far has been so supportive, generous, kind, fun, and a bunch of other adjectives to show how great they are. These people are what push me to keep doing what I do, and although my service year isn’t over yet, I know I’ll miss them when it’s over. With friends like these by your side, you can do anything.
