Discovering Philadelphia: Creating Comfort & Connection

So far my experiences volunteering at my service site has been going really well. I handle some of the programming and volunteer things happening at Sanctuary Farm. Something unique about my experience is that I get to build relationships with the community, as I am seeing many members on a regular basis. I have enjoyed hearing their stories and how they have overcome the challenges of living in Philadelphia. It is funny because I did not realize how much I enjoy living in my service city. There is tons of history and beauty that I have only scratched the surface in seeing. I am looking forward to seeing what else Philadelphia has to offer.

One thing we prioritize in my community is making sure our space is comfortable for each other even though it is only the two of us. We share a weekly meal together and plan monthly spirituality nights. We also make sure that if any issue arises we are comfortable addressing the issue and coming up with solutions together. One big thing I did to make my house feel like home is that I did a picture wall of all the important people in my life. I have added LED lights to my room to give a more homey vibe, and make sure that it is a space I want to come home to after a long day of work.

I have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know some of the Sisters of Mercy. Their openness and willingness to welcome me into their home and share a meal together has made me feel more welcome when I was getting used to a new job and living in a new city. They have inspired me to look more deeply into my spiritual journey, and made me feel comfortable in my decision to become a Mercy Volunteer. I wanted to give back to my community while also having the space to learn and grow. Hearing the reason of why each Sister became a Sister has challenged me every day, and the choice of what attitude I will bring to work, and what is my reason for showing up every day. Overall, being a Mercy Volunteer has taught me how strong I am, and how I have overcome the challenges of doing something out of my comfort zone, and I look forward to seeing what the rest of the year has to offer me.
