Building Community in the Rio Grande Valley

The most enriching part of this experience so far has been becoming part of the community here in the Valley. Returning to the same summer camp each day has allowed me to build meaningful relationships with the children and watch those connections grow over time. It has been an honor not only to connect with the local children and families, but also to meet volunteers who have traveled from across the country to serve alongside us. Through these interactions, I have seen how welcoming and supportive this community is. The experience has shown me that service is not just about helping others, but also about learning from the people you meet. Seeing the mutual affection we share in welcoming strangers has been both humbling and inspiring. These relationships have made this experience far more meaningful than I ever expected. –Helena Polinsky

The most enriching part of being at ARISE Adelante this summer has been the opportunity to experience the culture of The RGV without feeling like a complete outsider. The staff and local volunteers at South Tower have been so welcoming and open regarding everything from me practicing my Spanish skills to my general questions about the area. It has been so amazing to see everything the area has to offer. I recognize the privilege I have to be able to be here, and I thank God for it every day. Life alongside the border is not something I ever thought I would be exposed to. It is one thing to hear about the border crisis in the news, and something entirely different to be face to face with the wall. I have become aware of issues and cautions I did not even think existed. I will carry all the pain, knowledge, and love I have witnessed down here for the rest of my life, and I would not have it any other way. –Olivia Price

This experience has been very enriching in a variety of ways. However, what has stuck with me the most so far are the connections I have made. Spending time with members of the ARISE Adelante community and different volunteers each week, learning with and from each other has been an incredible opportunity. I’ve enjoyed being able to both find common ground and celebrate the differences in our respective lives. From receiving bracelets made by some of the kids to sharing stories with the staff and dancing with everyone at the Despedida celebrations at the end of the week, I know I’m going to carry every moment of this experience with me as I move forward with my life. –Maya Scheuerman
